It is essential to let the toxic fumes out of the system as they can deteriorate the overall well-being and functioning of the engine. A typical exhaust system comprises of five major parts - exhaust manifold, oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, muffler and exhaust pipe. The exhaust manifold collects the exhaust from each cylinder and combines it into one single pipe. The oxygen sensor, which is fixed on top of the exhaust manifold, measures how much oxygen is present in the exhaust and adds or subtracts fuel based on this measurement. The function of the catalytic converter is to convert harmful gases released from the engine into water vapour and carbon dioxide, while the muffler silences the sounds from the gases exiting the exhaust.
